What is it about camping that induces in me the need to have a fry up in the morning?
I mean, can you imagine anything designed to make it harder to do the ‘full works’ than two rather wobbly single gas burners and a couple of non-stick pans that last saw the non-stick coating several years ago?
Still, there I was in the tent (yes, in the tent – it was raining) with two gas burners and a couple of dodgy pans, cooking bacon, eggs, sausages and baked beans whilst the dog salivated outside and the boys did what boys like to do ie: played on the monkey swing (in the rain) and got wet and very muddy.
We camped at Buttermere which I chose as it didn’t have all singing all dancing facilities, just the basics. What it made up with was stunning views and fantastic walks (plus fab home made ice-cream from the farm).
I remember going camping with our eldest who was only a baby at the time, plus I was pregnant with our second child (tip: don’t try using a sleeping bag when heavily pregnant, you won’t fit). We took our cloth nappies along with us as the campsite had a washing machine - what a luxury - and pegged them on the guy lines to dry!
Camping and children? Definitely - just think of the memories they’ll have, but don’t expect to come back with any clean clothes!
